Shoulder Pain Guide

Download our FREE Guide: "6 Simple Reminders To Help Prevent And Potentially Fix, Shoulder Pain"

...Without The Use of Pills, Injections or Surgery

  • Do you have an ache in your shoulder or sharp pain shooting down your arm?
  • Does it keep you awake at night and hurt when you lift your arms?
  • Scared that you might need surgery and want to avoid it?

Well, guess what?

It won't magically get better if you ignore it.

Rest is not best.

In fact, if your shoulder joint grinds and cracks when you raise your arms or if you can’t lift your arms over your head without pain, or pain that shoots down your arm, you’re starting to feel the first signs of muscle weakness and finding it increasingly difficult to move your arm, please book a consult with one of our physios right away because you have the beginning stages of shoulder dysfunction which can lead to tendonitis, sprains, strains and potentially frozen shoulder.

Plus, not being able to sleep on one side is no way to live?!

If that sounds like how your Shoulder feels. Don't worry. You're not alone. We see patients who initially ignore the signs or put it down to general aches and pains or “just getting old” all the time. But there are the lucky ones – who came to see us before things got serious. Unfortunately, we see just as many patients whose shoulders are “too far gone – landing them up in surgery to have it repaired. Luckily for them, though, we're experts in physiotherapy to prevent this from happening to you. It's one of the most common types of rehab we provide at our physiotherapy clinic in Markham, Ontario.

(If you’ve managed to avoid surgery so far, don't leave it to chance. Because worst-case scenario, you could end up needing shoulder surgery or develop a long-term disability like arthritis and lose your independence altogether).

When it comes to Shoulder Pain, the first things patients ask us is:

“Why Me?”...

or

Why Is My Shoulder Still Hurting When I’ve Been Resting For At Least 4 Months?”

We just expect our bodies to fix things, don’t we?

Like magic, we want to wake up one morning and feel like we did before the pain started… But months later, you're still in pain – feeling even stiffer and more uncomfortable than when it started, right?

Does That Sound Like You?

So many patients who come to see us with shoulder pain say,

"I saw my doctor when the pain started. They told me it was my age/growing pains/overuse. They said I should stop what I was doing and take prescription anti-inflammatories and go back in three weeks if I was still in pain”.

They sit at home, “resting” on doctor's orders, not moving or exercising.

But nothing changes, of course – and they're back in the doctor's office three weeks later with a few more pounds added to the "Molson Muscle."

Think about it this way…

What happens when you try to spin the pedals?

The tires won’t turn, eh?

Now, imagine I tell you to take your bike and REST it for three weeks.

You spray the gears with WD40 (painkillers) every day.

Then you try the pedals again in three weeks.

What's changed?

Correct – absolutely NOTHING.

You didn't fix the problem.

The chain in your body needs attention.

No amount of rest, painkillers, or other pain-masking methods is going to fix it.

We help you fix it for good, naturally – without pills, injections, or surgery.

If you haven’t studied anatomy and physiology and how the musculoskeletal system works. Shoulder pain is confusing because there are many potential causes, from strains, sprains and structural problems to injuries, medical conditions, and full-blown Rotator Cuff tendon tears. But whatever the reason, believing that you must endure it as part of life or a natural part of getting older, categorically isn’t true. Not on our watch, anyway.

If You Are Living With Pain, Here’s The Top 7 Reasons Why Shoulder Pain Is Lasting Longer Than It Should:

  • You thought it would go away on it’s own - but it didn’t
  • The doctor gave you prehistoric advice to rest and take painkillers – except the pills made you feel sick, and the pain came back as soon as the drugs wore off.
  • Well-meaning (but misguided) friends and relatives told you they’ve all got shoulder pain, too, so you should just accept it.
  • You tried a hypnotist, a herbalist, an energy healer and anyone else willing to take your money, but nothing helped.
  • You tried curing yourself with YouTube videos, fancy foam rollers and Shoulder stretching routines, but they either didn't help or made your pain a million times worse.
  • You swore yourself off all forms of exercise and movement and watched TV for three straight weeks. It seemed like a good idea to rest. But all that did was make your shoulder muscles even stiffer and lifting your arms even more painful.
  • You tried a relaxing spa massage to try and escape from the pain. It worked for a while, but the pain returned within a couple of days.

Some of these are tongue in cheek. We speak from many years of experience treating patients who are desperate to fix their Shoulder pain and avoid surgery. But we also know that Shoulder pain is no laughing matter. It’s miserable. That’s why we’re so passionate about it – and we’re seriously good at what we do.

You don’t have to put up with shoulder pain – we would love to help you get rid of it for good. All you need to do to get started is book a free appointment with one of our physiotherapists. You can choose to do this via the telephone or a Discovery Visit at our clinic in Markham, Ontario. But, again, there is no obligation to commit to treatment – it's just an opportunity for you to find out how we can help and decide whether we're the right fit for you.

How does that sound?

What Can I do to Get Rid of My Shoulder Pain Quickly?...

Well, here are our top tips:

  • The first one is a no-brainer - Decide to get help. Don’t procrastinate any longer. If you’ve had shoulder pain for a while, it most likely won't get better with time. Instead, you'll be another six months older and still in pain – potentially with permanent damage that you can't fix with physiotherapy alone. So commit to doing something about it before things get even worse.
  • Check your posture. How are you sitting or standing now? Are your shoulders hunched forwards? How do you sit at work? Same. What about when you're asleep? Do you curl into a ball? These positions contribute to super-tight chest muscles and slack back muscles—the perfect storm for shoulder issues. Don't go crazy, though – because pushing your shoulders too far back in a manic fashion can cause just as many problems. Instead, just remind yourself regularly to sit up straight – or even better, get up and walk around.
  • Work on your core  We don’t have abdominal muscles just to look good in swimwear. Your “core” is much more important than that – it supports your spine and upper back. The long-term goal should be to strengthen your core with exercises provided by a physio. But, in the meantime, focus on pulling in your belly button when you’re sitting for long periods.
  • Get “in-person” Physiotherapy – Nothing beats professional physiotherapy for Achilles’ pain and to avoid ending up needing unnecessary surgery. At PHYSIO FOR SURGERY, it's one of the most common complaints we treat. So we can find the root cause quickly and get you back to work, in the gym and moving your arms normally again as soon as possible.

If you would like to know how the physiotherapy team at Physio For Surgery, Markham can help fix your Shoulder pain – we recommend you start with a free, risk-free appointment to try us out:

So the next question is:

“How Can Choosing to See a Therapist at Physio For Surgery Help You Get Rid of Your Shoulder Pain?

Here are just a few of the things our physiotherapists can do for you:

  • We can reduce your pain and mobilize your muscles and joints
  • We can pinpoint the underlying cause of your shoulder pain
  • We help you get a good night’s sleep – without Shoulder pain keeping you awake at night, so you have more energy the following day
  • We make sure your problem is 100% fixed and provide you with exercises and advice to prevent it from happening again in the future, so you can stop worrying and start enjoying life again
  • We keep you out of the doctor’s office, help you stop taking painkillers and protect your long-term health by reducing your pain levels naturally
  • We can help you avoid dangerous surgery and those awful steroid injections
  • We stop you from missing out on exercising and playing sports and get you back up and running without pain
  • We help you dance, swim, and play golf/tennis again without pain or feeling like you can’t move your arm properly

I'm very happy with the results I got after only two months doing physical therapy.About seven months ago, I injured my left wrist ( De Quarvain)while exercising. After visiting a rheumatologist, I decided to start physiotherapy sessions, even though my doctor repeatedly told me that physiotherapy would not help my condition and suggested injections instead.I started physiotherapy with Brandon about two months ago and I can say that he is a skilled physiotherapist, and he truly cares about your issue, putting in all his effort to resolve it.Now,after two months passed ,my left wrist has completely recovered. I am very grateful for this physiotherapy and truly appreciate the highly professional service and care I received.

Both Nick and Brandon gave me the motivation to keep pushing every single day and gave me the certainty ill be back to playing football in no time if I stayed consistent. After 6 constant months with physio I can say I am back on the field training with no complications. Thank you to both Nick and Brandon

I have nothing but positive things to say about Nick (and Physio for Surgery). I tore my ACL, MCL, and meniscus last year. Not only did Nick's treatments help in my recovery, but he explained all of the different paths back to having long term health in my knee (both surgical and non-surgical) so that I could make a difficult decision as to how to approach my injury. He was extremely honest and did not sugar coat what each path would entail. Nick also went above and beyond contacting me to check-in on how I was progressing after we finished our treatments. He truly cares about his clients, and helping them in recovering from injury. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for therapist to support in their recovery from an injury.

It started with a cry for help, that was answered right away by Nick. He explained he was a certified Athletic therapist and said after a hands on assessment he would have a plan of action for my road to recovery. Nick only asked that I listen to his plan and show up. It's been a journey but Nick warned me that Frozen Shoulder is an injury that requires time and commitment, but I have definitely seen results every step of the way. Nick made adjustments when he noticed certain treatments weren't working and created a new treatment plan. If I had questions about my progress they were addressed and I was confident in our plan. We noticed that things progressed quicker than he expected and we made adjustments to the frequency of my visits. I have full confidence in Nick and would recommend him to anyone in need of help from an injury or surgery. Nick's commitment and professionalism is very refreshing. Ally at the front desk is very committed to maintaining a level of professionalism that Nick has established.

Nick and Brandon treat our entire family with so much respect, my sons are athletes and when injured they are able to get back to competitive sports really fast. From concussion treatment to osgood schlatter knees to sprains. I was so impressed with the concussion knowledge and treatment for my eldest who I thought due to the extent of the injury that he was going to be out for months was back within weeks. On top of it they are cool guys who care about their community and patients.
